Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh inundated large tracts of land as they continued to flow over danger mark at several places forcing the officials to evacuate people living in low-lying areas to safer places.
Officials claim that major rivers including Sharda, Ghaghra, Ganga, Yamuna and Saryu inundated low lying areas of eastern parts of the state. Two more people died of rain related incidents in the last 24 hours taking the toll to 107.
Central Flood Control office in luckow said that Ghagra river, which had submerged numerous villages was flowing 2 metres above the danger mark at Elgin Bridge in Barabanki. It was also flowing over the danger mark at Ayodhya and Ballia and still rising.
Sharda river was flowing above the red level at Palia Kalan in lakhimpur Kheri and its upward movement was continuing. Officials said that Saryu was flowing near the danger level at Gonda, Sant Kabirnagar and Basti and was rising all through its course.
The Flood Control official said that other rivers in the state were also in spate and because of the heavy downpour in the catchment areas their rising trend was on.
Meanwhile the Weather office in lucknow said that highest rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded at Bahriach with 89.2 millimeters followed by 80.8 in Kushinagar, 68.4 in Gorakhpur, 60.4 in Maharajganj and 55.4 at Sidharthnagar. Met officials have predicted heavy rainfalls in eastern UP along with scattered rains in other parts of the state during the next 48 hours.
The Opposition parties have criticised state government for its failure to provide relief to the people. The BJP will submit a memorandu to Governor B.l. Joshi regarding this on Wednesday.
BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that over 1700 villages are totally inundated and the state government has no plans to provide relief to the people. "Major chunk of the Rs 725 purse allocated for providing relief to victims has not been used," said Pathak.
