The lok Gathbandhan Party (lGP) criticized the state government for not fulfilling poll promises of farm loan wiver made to farmers. The party said that during the last Assembly election, the BJP had announced complete waiver of farm loans but the policy formulated by the BJP government was against the spirit of the promise made.

Party spokesperson SN Singh said on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had repeatedly assured farmers of waiving off their loans during the election rallies in UP.

“After coming to power, the BJP reneged from the promise as a result of which the farmers were feeling cheated in UP,” said t he lGP spokesman.

Expressing concern over the poor condition of farmers, Singh said that farming has become worse than the Blue Whale game and forced thousands of farmers to end their lives. He claimed that farmer’s suicides triggered by indebtedness have become annual pan-India phenomenon which successive governments at the Centre and state have failed to prevent.

The lGP spokesman said that the UP government loan waiving formula was absolutely lopsided and directionless and would not the farmers at all help who were reeling under immense financial problems for various reasons.

Singh further said that if the BJP government was really interested in the welfare of farmers then it should free the farmers from their indebtedness. He said that conditional waiving would not help solve the problem, it would only help the banking sector as the government has repaid them the amount loaned out to farmers.

“In case of UP, the government has announced waiving of loans worth Rs 36000 crore which would cover one lakh farmers, while the actual numbers of loaners were much higher,” Singh pointed out.

The lGP spokesman said that the present loan waiver has become a laughing-stock among the masses and only caused resentment among the farmers. He aid that the lGP believed in one-time ull waiver accompanied by well-though out agriculture policy to keep away the farming community from further loan shocks.
