Jayant consolidating his hold over west UP

Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary has embarked on a comprehensive village-to-village campaign aimed at consolidating his hold in west Uttar Pradesh and strengthening ties with different communities.

Political experts speculate that Jayant Chaudhary’s focus on the Muslim population in the region through this campaign is an attempt to garner their support. Moreover, rumours of a potential alliance between the RLD and the Congress are gaining traction in west UP, indicating that this campaign might be a preparation for such a partnership.

As part of his extensive outreach, Jayant Chaudhary plans to visit 1,500 villages across western UP during the campaign. So far, he has interacted with the people in 150 villages, engaging with individuals from all classes and social groups. He aims to lay the groundwork for a new alliance in the region, bringing together Jats, farmers, backward castes and Muslims.

The RLD has previously formed alliances with other parties such as the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Aam Aadmi Party.

RLD has influence in 17 districts of western UP. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the RLD suffered loss due to the ‘Modi wave’, and it failed to make significant gains even in the 2017 UP assembly elections.

However, the RLD’s alliance with the SP has faced challenges, particularly regarding ticket distribution during the assembly and local bodies’ elections. Several RLD leaders became disgruntled and left the party as a result.

To mitigate risks ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Jayant Chaudhary is exploring alternative options in case the alliance with the SP breaks.

“One potential alternative is a partnership with the Azad Samaj Party (ASP) and the Congress. By engaging with Chandrashekhar, the ASP leader, Jayant Chaudhary aims to build a coalition that encompasses Jats, Dalits and Muslims.

This alignment is already evident in the state of Rajasthan, where both parties share a common front, said Nomita P Kumar of the Giri Institute of Development Studies (GIDS).

Trilok Tyagi, the national general secretary of the RLD, said Jayant Chaudhary’s campaign aims to reach every class, caste and community, demonstrating the RLD’s dedication to the well-being of all citizens.

Sunil Rohta, state spokesperson of the RLD, emphasises that this village-to-village campaign serves as a platform to unite society as a whole, transcending divisions based on community, religion or caste.

“The RLD aims to ensure that every voice is heard, unlike other parties that have historically marginalised certain segments of the population. By personally engaging with individuals from various backgrounds, Jayant Chaudhary demonstrates his commitment to equality and inclusivity,” he said.

In a display of alliance-building, Jayant Chaudhary attended the swearing-in ceremony of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, making him the sole representative from Uttar Pradesh among the attending leaders. This gesture, along with Rahul Gandhi’s mention of Jayant Chaudhary during the event and the subsequent warm welcome, suggests a cordial relationship between the RLD leader and the Congress.

As Jayant Chaudhary forges ahead with his village-to-village campaign, his efforts to secure Muslim support and strengthen the RLD’s position in west UP have become increasingly apparent. The possibility of an alliance with the Congress looms large, potentially reshaping the political landscape in the region as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw near.
