The National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths arrested an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent from Kachchh area of Gujarat on Sunday.
The arrested ISI agent was wanted in connection with the investigation of a case registered by the NIA in Gomtinagar here in April after the Anti-Terrorists Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested an ISI agent identified as Mohammed Rashid from Chandauli in January this year.
The case was first registered with the ATS and later its probe was transferred to the NIA.
“On Sunday, we arrested an accused identified as Rajakbhai Kumbhar in connection with the investigation of a case registered in Lucknow. Kumbhar, a supervisor at Mundra dockyard, has been found to be working as an ISI agent,” confirmed a NIA officer here on Monday.
The NIA was looking for him after it registered an FIR on January 19, 2020, at ATS (Anti-Terrorists Squad) police station in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow following the arrest of Mohammed Rashid.
The statement said the NIA had re-registered this case on April 6, 2020 under sections 123 of Indian Penal Code and 13, 17 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)  Act.
“During investigation, it came to light that Rashid was in contact with defence/ISI handlers of Pakistan and had visited Pakistan twice. A search was conducted at the house of Rajakbhai Kumbhar on August 27 and several incriminating documents were seized from there,” the statement added.
An NIA statement said that during investigation, it also came to light that Kumbhar worked as an ISI agent and transferred Rs 5,000 through Paytm into the account of one Rizwan and it was handed over to Rashid. “This amount was remitted to Rashid by Kumbhar on the directions of ISI handlers in lieu of the information supplied by Rashid to ISI agents,” the statement said.
According to the NIA, Rashid had sent photographs of some sensitive and strategically important establishments in India to Pakistan and had also shared information about the movement of armed forces with ISI operatives in Pakistan.
Further investigations are on.
