Union minister and Lok Sabha member from Amethi, Smriti Irani attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi, saying the voters had taught a lesson to the naamdar and had elected a kaamdar.

The Union minister accompanied by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant was in Amethi on Saturday.

“Did anyone ever think that a woman from a common family could defeat a big personality? I am grateful that Amethi made a revolution when the people here went to vote for Bharatiya Janata Party in a big way in all the booths,” she said and added, “Now the people of Amethi had got rid of a person who got elected but never turned his face towards the people.”

Irani and the Goa Chief Minister also met the family members of late former gram pradhan Surendra Singh of Baraulia village who was shot dead recently. Surendra Singh was a close aide of Smriti Irani in Amethi and had worked for her in the recent Lok Sabha election.

Pramod Sawant said, “I had come to work in Amethi in 2014 too as a worker. I had worked with Surendra Singh for 20-22 days, I knew him very well.”

“We are saddened at the death of Singh. He was a devoted party worker and the party stands with his family,” Sawant told reporters after meeting the family.

Smriti Irani accompanied by the Goa Chief Minister is on a two-day visit to Amethi. The two leaders also met people at the village adopted by late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Parrikar had adopted these villages under the National Democratic Alliance government’s ‘Village Adoption Programme’.

“Manohar Parrikar had adopted this village. If the UP government wants, we will work on education, health, roads, water and other problems in this village in his (Parrikar’s) memory,” the Goa Chief Minister said.

During her Amethi visit, Smriti Irani played a good Samaritan and took an ailing woman to hospital in her convoy ambulance on Saturday. She directed the officials to take the woman to the district hospital. The woman’s relatives also boarded the ambulance.

Earlier on May 25, Smriti Irani had visited the constituency after the murder of her aide Surendra Singh in Baraulia village of the district.

Later, Smriti Irani inaugurated and laid foundation stones of several development and welfare schemes. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Minister of State and minister in-charge of Amethi district, Mohsin Raza, were also present on the occasion.
