Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday accused the Yogi Adityanath government of being vindictive against its Rampur Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Azam Khan by framing him in trumped up cases.
He alleged that the BJP government was conspiring to destroy the Jauhar University founded by Azam Khan, who is presently in jail since February 26 last year.
Addressing the party cadre who had cycled from Rampur and arrived here on Saturday, Akhilesh Yadav said the Samajwadi Party stood firmly behind Azam Khan. Yadav said the charges against Azam Khan were baseless.
The SP on March 12 had launched the cycle yatra from Rampur to Lucknow in support of Azam Khan and his family. The cycle yatra reached Lucknow after passing through Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur and Sitapur.
Akhilesh Yadav had himself flagged off the cycle yatra at Rampur.
Yadav alleged that the Yogi government had unleashed a reign of terror against Azam Khan and the rank and file of the Samajwadi Party as over 10,000 cases had been registered against the party cadre.
