Over 1.8 million government employees have threatened to go on indefinite strike if the Reservation in Promotion Amendment Bill is tabled in the lok Sabha.
The Sarvajan Hitaye Sanrakshan Samiti, the state employees’ organisation opposing the 117th Amendment Bill already passed by the Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday announced to go on indefinite strike if the Central Government tabled the Bill in the lok Sabha on the pressure of Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati.
SHSS president Shailendra Dubey said in a statement here that there was a move to bring the Reservation in Promotion Amendment Bill in the lok Sabha but it would not be tolerated at any cost. Dubey also asked the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party to clarify their stands on the issue. “Both the Congress and the BJP are hand in glove on the issue of passage of the Bill which would end the promotion opportunities of 78 per cent of state and central employees,’’ he said.
The ruling Samajwadi Party is the only political party in the country to openly oppose reservations in promotion after the Supreme Court ruled that seniority and merit should be the only basis for promotion of employees.
