Governor Ram Naik advocated the introduction of police commissionerate system (PCS) in all cities of Uttar Pradesh having population of 20 lakh and above to improve policing.
“Just on the line of police commissionerate system in other cities of the country, Uttar Pradesh too should go for a pilot project of introducing the system in the state,” Naik asserted after inspecting the ceremonial police parade at Reserve Police Lines here on Thursday.
The Governor suggested to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that a beginning in this regard could be done from Lucknow, Kanpur and Ghaziabad districts.
The introduction of the police commissionerate system has been a long-pending demand of the officers of Indian Police Services (IPS) cadre.
“The police commissionerate system is successfully working in 71 big cities of the country, out of which 19 have a population of more then 20 lakh,” Naik pointed out.
Highlighting Kumbh Mela, the Governor said that it would add new vistas to Uttar Pradesh across the world and the Kumbh Mela in 2019 would have special significance as it would be held in Prayagraj and not in Allahabad.
Naik said that people of the world were eagerly looking forward to participating in the Kumbh Mela beginning from January 15 next year and hoped that nearly 15 crore people would take the holy dip at the Sangam.
Lauding the role of UP Police, Naik said that increasing investment in the state was a pointer that law and order had improved and now people not only from India, but also from abroad were looking forward to expanding their business in the state.
The Governor also said that besides large-scale investments, the drop in crime as presented by the UP Police was indicative of improvement on the law and order front.
Interestingly, Naik took a dig at the media, asking them to be more sensitive while reporting.
“Media persons have to be sensitive and alert while reporting any matter. They should keep in mind not to just report incidents of crime but also highlight achievements of the UP Police along with their humanitarian work. This will help in building trust of the public in the law enforcing agency,” Naik advised.
The Governor also appreciated the parade on the occasion besides praising a wall raised on the ground. The ceremonial parade this year was lead by Commandant of 9th Battalion PAC, Sanjeev Tyagi, and his second-in-command was Additional Superintendent of Police (North) in Lucknow, Anoop Singh.
On the occasion, Naik also felicitated police officials who won President’s Medal in different categories. Prominent recipients include ADG Abhay Prasad, SP (Security) Rajesh Pandey, retired ASP Raghvendra Singh, retired DySP Raman Pal Singh, sub-inspectors Ram Bahadur Singh and Rama Kant Singh, retired head constable Shanti Swaroop etc.
SP (Security) Rajesh Pandey was feted with President’s Medal for Gallantry.
Besides the Governor and the Chief Minister, senior government officers and UP Police officials were also present at the function.
