The Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters on Tuesday directed all the district police chiefs to take action based on evidence in connection with cases related to the Friday violence. Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Prashant Kumar said all the district police chiefs have been directed to act only on the basis of evidence such as videos, photos from the spot of violence.

“Innocent should not be harassed by police under no circumstances but those involved in sloganeering and defying law should not be let off,” Kumar said. He added that the entire state was peaceful and they were monitoring the situation on a daily basis in the violence-hit districts and other sensitive districts where PAC and RAF personnel have been deployed.

“We are also taking stringent legal action against those indulging in violence invoking those sections of the IPC in which bail will not be easy. They will be booked under Gangsters Act and will also be made to pay for damage to properties,” Kumar said.

“Not only police but also the district administrative officials have been asked to interact with religious leaders and members of civil society in order to prevent a repeat of violent protests,” he added.

About the injuries caused to cops while dealing with the trouble-makers, the ADG said the police were exercising maximum restraint and working as per the law.

Four days after the violence, the tally of arrests made by the UP Police has climbed to 350. The police teams are working, gathering evidence, information and video evidence against the instigators to tighten the noose around them.
