In a sensational case of fleeing from police custody, four members of inter-state auto-lifting gang managed to slip out of the lock-up of Tajganj police station in Agra and escaped safely in the wee hours of Monday.

The alertness of the cops of the police station could be easily gauged from the fact that the criminals not slipped silently from the police station, but had brutally assaulted another criminal locked in the same lock-up, then pushed up the gates and safely escaped in the wee hours of Monday. Senior police officers who rushed to the spot after learning of the incident claimed to have formed team to re-arrest the criminals. They also claimed that all the cops who were on duty along with those responsible for the incident, would be placed under suspension, and departmental proceedings should be also made against them besides getting a criminal case registered in the matter.

Reports said that the cops fo Tazganj police station in Agra busted an auto-lifting gang and arrested for accused on Sunday evening. The accused were identified as Malkhan aka Ajeet, a native of Akrabad in Aligarh, Prahlad, hailing from Tundla in Ferojabad, Yogesh Singh, residing in Tejnagar Gummat in Agra, and Gaurav, belonging to Kotwali area in Farukabad. All the four were lodged inside the lock-up of the police station as they had to be produced before the magistrate for remand on Monday.

Reports further said that around 3:25am on Monday, all the four criminals brutally assaulted the other accused lodged in the same lock-up. However, none of the cops responded to rescue the criminal. Finding that all the cops were in deep sleep, the criminals took advantage and pushed up the gates of the lock-up and slipped from it and escaped. It was only the fifth criminal that alerted the cops and raised alarm after which the cops wake up from the slumber and tried to nab the criminals. But when they failed in their efforts, they finally passed on the message to the senior officers after which the entire district swung into action and massive operation to re-arrest the accused has been launched. When even then their efforts went futile, senior officers brought the matter in black and white and initiated further necessary legal action to save themselves from further embarrassment.
