A doctor posted at the Reserve Police Lines in Kanpur Nagar landed in jail in Unnao on November 9 on charges of fraudulently running a degree college there and taking admission of students on seats in excess than permitted by the Kanpur university.
He was posted at the Kanpur Nagar district jail on COVID-19 duty but was absent since October 19.
With the information about his being lodged in the jail, the officials have started updating their documents.
It may be recalled that the erstwhile Chief Medical Officer Dr Ashok Shukla had posted Dr Surendra Kumar Singh at the Reserve Police Lines hospital here.
Sources said that after his posting there, Dr Singh did not run the OPD even for a day. He would visit the hospital after every 10 days and return after signing the attendance register.
During the past one year, he did not run any OPD at the Reserve Police Lines hospital nor did he treat any patient despite putting his signature on the OPD register.
But he was found always on duty due to his connivance with the staff of CMO office, source said.
On coming to know about the happening, the reserve inspector of Police Lines informed SSP Pritinder Singh while the jail superintendent apprised the district magistrate and CMO of the incident in writing.
It was stated that Dr Surendra Kumar Singh was the manager of Sardar Patel Bansh Gopal Sanatan Dharm Degree College at Hindpal Kheda Mahai, Bighapur, Unnao. It was alleged that against permission for 360 seats granted by the CSJM University in 2005, he had taken admission of 800 students (boys and girls) in his college.
As 440 students were not allowed to appear in university examinations, they had lodged an FIR against the college manager Dr Surendra Kumar Singh and principal at the Bighapur police station.
The court sent him to jail when he surrendered himself there on November 9.
Commenting on the issue, CMO, Kanpur Dr Anil Mishra said he was aware that Dr Surendra Kumar Singh, being a government employee, was also running a degree college.
A detailed report would be sent to state administration soon, he added.
