The issue of Rampur dalits has come to an end after the district administration gave them a written assurance that their houses will not be razed now on the intervention of National Commission for Schedule Caste (NCSC) on Thursday morning. The agitated members of the Dalit community, who also took symbolic Islam and were on fast unto death for last four days, ended their stir and took juice soon after the agreement.

The Commission has also asked to the administration to provide the ownership rights related documents to the people of Valmiki community within 15 days.   NCSC vice-chairman Dr Ram Kumar Berka intervened and persuaded the agitating Valmikis to end their agitation. The administration also assured to withdraw cases registered against the agitating members of Valmiki community in the above matter, those arrested would be released etc.

It may be mentioned that the Nagar Palika Parishad marked about 80 houses on the Topkhana road belonging to Valmiki community and claimed that that the structures  were illegal and were encroachments on the road. The incident gained the attention of media after people of Valmiki community sat on a indefinite hunger strike. The people of Valmiki community then announced to convert themselves to Islam, the dalit members also wore a skull cap. The dalit members alleged that, their houses were being vandalized on the orders of Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan.

The situation got more tensed when Hindu radical groups like Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) joined the agitation along with the dalit members.
