While Central Government move of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes had posed problems for the public particularly for the daily wagers, hundreds of labourers working in Dubai and Jeddah were not paid wages and illegally detained overseas by their employers. These workers sent tweet about their condition to director general of police Javeed Ahmed, who subsequently responded on Tuesday by writing a letter to the State government seeking their immediate intervention to get the victims released.
“We are receiving messages on our twitter handle @uppolice for the last few days through which the residents of Uttar Pradesh working in Jeddah and Dubai were informing us that they were not getting their salaries and that the employers had also illegally detained them”, disclosed director general of police Javeed Ahmed here on Tuesday evening. An official release of the DGP office confirmed that these victims provided their details along with their mobile numbers seeking help to get them released and rescued from the Gulf countries. The release said that responding positively to the SOS sent to his twitter handle, Ahmed on Tuesday had written a letter to the state government and to principle secretary home, Dewasheesh Panda, requesting them to immediately get in touch with the officials concerned in Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as well with Indian High Commission office in Dubai and Jeddah to extend necessary help to the stranded workers. The release said that DGP also twitted the above problem in MEA twitter handle @MEAindia and also to the twitter handle of minister of state for foreign affairs @Gen_VKsingh asking for immediate help in the matter.
