Decks have been cleared for declaring Amethi as a district after state government issued notification in this regard on Friday, government spokesman said here. The headquarters of the newly formed district would be Gauriganj.
Amethi assumes importance because the parliamentary constituency by this name is represented by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The neighbouring constituency of Rae Bareli is represented by Congress national President Sonia Gandhi. Principal Secretary Revenue, K.S. Atoria said that the newly formed district will comprise our tehsils - three of them Amethi, Gauri Ganj and Musafirkhana would be carved out of Sultanpur district while one tehsil Tiloi from Rae Bareli.
"A re-jig of revenue villages have been done as some of villages have been brought under Tiloi and Amethi tehsils," Atoria said.
The previous government of Mayawati had constituted a district comprising Amethi, Gauri ganj, Musafirkhana and Tiloi and named it after dalit icon Shahuji Maharaj. When Samajwadi Party party Government had re-named Sahhuji Maharaj as Amethi through a notification. But the Allahabad High Court had quashed the notification on July
4 thus, forcing the government to take an administrative route to announce creation of Amethi district.
