Cow-slaughter areas to be declared hotspots

Planning to take stern action against those killing cows, the UP Police will declare places reporting cow slaughter as hotspots and book the violators under Gangster’s Act or National Security Act (NSA).

Issuing an advisory to all district police chiefs and range and zone in-charges on Thursday, DGP HC Awasthi directed them to identify places frequently reporting cow slaughter and declare them as hotspots.

The police officers were asked to draw a plan to check cow-slaughter and prepare a list of those engaged in cow smuggling and slaughter.

The DGP said that after preparing the list, the violators be jailed and action be taken under UP Gangster’s Act or even NSA could be invoked against such elements.

The top cop also expressed displeasure over non-implementation of his earlier orders in this regard. He said that based on statistics, it had surfaced that there had been a spiral in cow-slaughter cases in some places.

“These incidents also disturb communal harmony and pose serious law and order problem before the agencies,” he said.

Awasthi reminded the officials that the state government was serious on cow slaughter and had issued directions from time to time to stop the illegal practice.

He also asked officers to identify cops who were not strictly enforcing government directions, remove them and if necessary, initiate departmental action against them.

The DGP also told officials, especially district police chiefs, to check connivance of local police in the crime. He also directed officers to develop intelligence network so that actionable inputs could be collected and action could be taken to check cow slaughter.
