A case has been registered against Kadipur police station inspector, sub-inspector and two constables for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The action was taken late Monday night after family members of a deceased youth protested for hours at Patel Chowk in the Kotwali area, demanding action against the cops. They claimed that he died due to negligence on the part of the policemen. The protest was called off after the accused cops were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Meanwhile, personnel from many police stations were summoned to the spot to avert any untoward incident.
Reports said Ankush Singh (20), who was a resident of Gopalpur under Mehnagar police station in Azamgarh, lived at his brother-in-law Harishankar Singh’s house in Atra Raibigo of Kadipur Kotwali, Sultanpur. He was carrying wood on a tractor-trolley on Monday night. It was alleged that Inspector Akhilesh Singh, along with three other policemen — later identified as Jitendra, Danish and Surendra — chased him near a tractor agency and caught hold of him. The cops allegedly forced Ankush to take the tractor-trolley to the police station. When he refused, the cops allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 to let him off.
Meanwhile, Ankush was pushed away by cops while Danish (constable) started the tractor in a bid to take it to the police station. However, he lost control of the tractor in a bid to avoid a pothole. Ankush fell down and was crushed under the wheels of the tractor.
The news spread like wildfire and within minutes, locals, along with family members and relatives of the deceased, reached the spot. They snatched the body from the police and took it to Patel Chowk in the Kotwali area. The protesters insisted on filing a murder case against the accused policemen.
Later, personnel from Karaundi Kalan, Chanda, Lambhua, Motigarpur, Dostpur, Akhandnagar and Jaisinghpur police stations were summoned to the spot.
ASP Vipul Kumar Srivastava also reached the spot and tried to defuse the situation. Later, he asked the family members to give a formal complaint in this regard so that a case could be registered. The case was registered against Inspector Akhilesh Kshama Singh and three other policemen.
