In Rae Bareli, sub-inspector Dharmendra Gautam posted in the police control room in Amethi district took leave and visited his native village in Majhgawan hamlet of Harchandpur area. On Monday night, Gautam, along with his servant Guru Prasad, slept by the tubewell outside his village.

Early on Tuesday morning, when villagers passed by the tubewell, they were shocked to find the body of the cop lying in a pool of blood. He seemed to have been attacked with a sharp-edged weapon. The villagers also found Guru Prasad locked inside the tubewell room. They took him out after which he told them that some unknown persons struck in the wee hours of Tuesday. They first assaulted him and locked him in the tubewell room and later hacked Gautam to death.

After learning about the incident, senior officers rushed to the spot and summoned a forensic team and sniffer dogs to get clues about the killers but efforts failed to pay off.

The police suspected some extra-marital relations behind the killing as the assailants locked Guru Prasad and not only killed the cop but also damaged his private parts with sharp-edged weapons. The cops were also looking into a possible political angle as Gautam’s brother Virendra Gautam was formerly a district panchayat member and had enmity with his opponents. A case was registered and investigations were on.
