Senior Congress leaders flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “Bhrashtachari No. 1” remark against late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, saying that no prime minister had ever used abusive words against any opposition leader.
At a rally in Uttar Pradesh this weekend, the Prime Minister had attacked Congress chief Rahul Gandhi saying, “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his lackeys but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No. 1’.”
“It is not only highly objectionable but also shameful, especially as the speaker was the Prime Minister. In the process, Modi degraded his office for cheap political gains,” said veteran Congress leader Pramod Tewari on Tuesday.
In a release issued on Tuesday, Tewari claimed that every party fought elections on the works and stature of tall leaders and Congress fought in the name of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi etc. just like the BJP was contesting election in the name of Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and others.
“However, none of the top leaders used any foul remarks against each other. But Modi seems to have forgotten all ethics and used foul words against a leader who is no more and had sacrificed his life for the nation. The nation would not forgive Modi for this and will give a befitting reply in the ongoing elections,” he added.
Congress leader in the Legislative Council, Deepak Singh, also launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister saying, “The BJP never fulfilled promises made during poll time. They are now seeking votes either in the name of martyrs or by insulting martyred leaders of Congress. Modi seems to have lost his mental balance after assessing that his days as prime minister are now numbered.”
