Congress last hope of sailing with BSP pre-poll alliance

Published on:

After witnessing almost total rout in last Assembly  elections in Uttar Pradesh majority of Congress Members of Parliament were advocating pre-poll alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party as they were seeing it as a last hope of sailing it through the battle of ballots after riding on shoulders of Blue Brigade.

Interestingly BSP is also reportedly not against any such proposal but they wanted that Congress should also share a good quota of seats with them in adjoining Hindi speaking states as well as in some Parts of South. BSP is said to be eager as by giving few seats to Congress in UP, they could get a good share in other States where at present they had very little presence.

However, sources said that  dreams of  Congress MPs being better placed in the coming Parliament elections has been shattered as Congress Yuvraj Rahul wanted to fight it alone without any alliance. Interestingly, Rahul was against alliance with any other parties and in a close door meeting, he even tried to convince the leaders in Maharastra that they should be ready to fight single handedly without any

alliance with Sharad Pawar led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This was revealed during a sting operation of meeting of Congress leaders recently.

Sources said that after assessing the ground realities and feeling the public nerves against the Congress particularly due to rising prices of all commodities including fuel and lPG as well as charges of corruption on senior leaders, most of the Congress MPs, who were already ensure a ticket for next Parliament elections from the same seat which they represents at present, were probing that how they could improve their chances of re-electing to the lok Sabha. Majority of them foresee very bleak chances of their victory particularly when they faced almost a total rout in last Assembly elections even when Rahul Gandhi made all possible efforts.

Even in Rae Bareli, represent by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the Parliament, Party lost all the five Assembly segments. Not only this, kin of three Congress MPs including Beni Prasad Verma, Jagdambika Pal, Zafar Ali Naqvi, Kamal Commando, Rasheed Masood all lost elections. Sources further said that sensing the anger of the public, most of the Party MPs felt that in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party, they could win with support of strong Dalit vote bank. Hence they advocated to make a pre-poll pact with BSP.

However sources said that Rahul is totally against this move and is not ready to make any pre-poll pact. He also seems to be made it very clear while addressing in a recent progamme in New Delhi in which he accused Mayawati for suppressing the Dalit leadership in the country and advocated that his Party wanted to create lakhs of leaders from down-trodden section of the society only than their conditions could be improved. It may be also mentioned here that Rahul was continuously making efforts to dent Mayawati’s dalit vote bank by visit the houses of members of her community and spending nights with them besides eating food.

Sources further confirmed that Rahul Gandhi is also against any pact with Mayawati as he reportedly suspect that if this pre-poll alliance will improve BSP’s over all tally, then after elections BSP supremo could bargain with other Parties including Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) with whom he made government in UP thrice and also that she could also tried to force the Congress to make her prime minister in the name of keeping communal forces away.
