Congress hits out at Central govt over Agnipath scheme

The Congress on Thursday attacked the Central government, accusing it of playing with the future of the youth through Agniveer Yojana, and claimed to have launched the nationwide campaign ‘Jai Jawan, War of Justice against Injustice’ from Bihar on January 31 last to raise the issue.

Addressing media persons at the UP Congress Committee headquarters here on Thursday, national spokesperson and president of the Congress on social media/digital platforms, Supriya Srinetra, said the ‘Jai Jawan: War of Justice against Injustice’ campaign highlighted the plight of 1.5 lakh youth who, after going through a rigorous selection process between 2019 and 2022, were accepted into the army but were denied recruitment even after all the procedures, because the Narendra Modi government suddenly brought the Agnipath scheme for the armed forces.

Srinetra said that the campaign demands: Return of the jobs that were snatched from 1.5 lakh youth when the Agnipath scheme was implemented, restoration of the old recruitment system in the defence forces, scrapping of the Agnipath scheme, and permanent status to all Agniveers in the forces.

The three-phase nationwide campaign will continue till March 20.
