Agitated by the remarks on party president by Union minister Smriti Irani in Parliament on Thursday, thousands of Congressmen took to the road and staged a huge demonstration in Amethi district on Friday afternoon.
The Congress leaders were demanding an apology from Smriti Irani, alleging that the local MP had made derogatory remarks on party president Sonia Gandhi. Several Congressmen were injured when police lathi-charged them to disperse the protesters.
Smriti Irani represents Amethi in Lok Sabha after she defeated former president of Congress, Rahul Gandhi, in the 2019 parliamentary election.
According to reports from Amethi, thousands of senior leaders and workers took to the street in Amethi and staged a protest against the alleged misbehavior by Smriti Irani with the Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
After being injured in the lathi-charge, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) spokesman Ashok Singh alleged that Smriti Irani herself called the senior officials of Amethi and directed them to lathi-charge the Congress workers. He said hundreds of people were injured in the lathi-charge. The party demanded an apology from Smriti Irani.
