Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that his government was committed to extending all help to the judiciary because the latter could work effectively only if it had all the resources at its disposal.

In his address during the meeting of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Court in New Delhi, Yadav said that the executive and the judiciary compliment each other.

“The Samajwadi Party government has always respected the judiciary and asked its officials to be present in the court hearing so that they could explain government working to Court then and there,” Yadav said in his speech which was read out by Principal Secretary (law) Abdul Shahid in New Delhi on Sunday.

Chief Minister said that state government was trying to effectively implement programmes for judiciary.

“Our hands are tied because we do not have enough funds and not even getting required support from the Union government. We expect magnanimity from the Centre towards states in this regard,” Yadav said in his speech.

He also elaborated as to how under the 14th Finance Commission, UP was promised more funds. The CM quoted a letter from PM Narendra Modi on April 23, 2015 promising mode funds.

“In my letters of June 9, 2015 and 21 September 2015, I had informed the PM that state has not got the additional funda. Until we get funds from the Centre, necessary infrastructure development in judiciary cannot be carried out,” he said.

Yadav said that the UP government was committed to strengthening the judicial system. The security of High Court has been enhanced, digitization of court documents and residential bungalows for judges are underway.

“We have a proposal to construct 500 courts for the Additional District and Sessions Judge and Civil Judge (junior division) foe which Rs 400 crores have been allotted in this budget and an additional Rs 100 crore for acquiring land for construction of courts and residential bungalows,” he said.

The CM also informed that the UP government has given over Rs 400 crores for the Advocate Relief Fund in the last four years and has spent Rs 120 crores for the construction of chambers of advocates and libraries.     .
