Governor Ram Naik has asked Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to direct the Urban Development department to send a comprehensive proposal to the Union government so that the urban poor could avail the benefit of owning houses at affordable cost under the Prdhan Mantra Avas Yojna. The scheme for urban poor was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, 2015.

In a letter to the CM, the Governor asked the state government to expedite the process of sending the proposal to the Centre.

``Being the Governor of the state, I am performing the role of bridge between the Centre and the state,’’said Naik.

The Governor during his recent visit to Delhi had met the Union Urban Development minister Venkaiah Naidu and they had discussed various proposals of development in UP.  The Union minister had told the Governor that the Centre had launched the `Prdhan Mantri Avas Yojna’ in June 2015, for providing houses to the urban poor at affordable price and also fixed a target of providing houses to 2 crore urban poor by the end of 2022.

The Union minister apprised the Governor that the UP government has not sent any proposal for availing the benefit of the scheme for urban poor. The Union minister informed the Governor that letters have also been sent to the UP government but there has been no response. So far, 21 states have sent their proposals to the Centre.

In his letter, the Governor expressed hope that the CM would accord top priority to the development of the state and soon send a proposal to the Centre for Prdhan Mantri Avas Yojna.

Meanwhile, the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of state universities has extended the term of Vice-Chancellor of Dr BR Ambedkar University (Agra) Prof Mohammed Muzammil by three months.

A statement issued by the Raj Bhawan said that the term has been extended for three months or till the selection of a new vice chancellor, whichever is earlier.
