Minister for Prison, Rajendra Chowdhary called that jails are no `torture home’ for the inmates but they are more of a rehabilitation centre were one should be taught that how he could live a normal public life once his punishment was over or he was out on bail.

``Jails are neither a luxury home were inmates could get all kind of facilities nor they are torture home for the prisoners but stay in prisons should be used as a rehabilitation exercise for them so that they could live how to enjoy public life once they were out”, called Minister for Prisons, Rajendra Chowdhary here on Thursday afternoon. He was reviewing the conditions of the prisons with senior officers of the Department as well as superintendent and jailors of the prisons.

Chowdhary directed that the jail staff should ensure that no one should misuse provisions of allowing kin of the inmates to meet him in jail. He pointed that the stay in jail was very painful for the inmates so the staff must behave with them properly and no compromise should be made with honesty and integrity.  He asked the staff to provide nutrient food to the inmates as per the jail manuals but warned that no privilege should be forwarded to those enjoying clout or having terror in the society.

Chowdhary further warned the officials that he will not tolerate any kind of corruption particularly taking money from the kin in the name of allowing them to meet inmates or to facilitate any kind of unlawful help to the prisoners. He also said that very soon the staff crunch which was presently faced by the Prison Department will be over and more hands will be added to run the day to day proceedings in the jail smoothly.

Principal Secretary (Home) RM Srivastava, who also attended the meeting asked the officials that they should utilize the funds sanctioned for upliftment of the prisons as well as for other upgradation purposes.
