Samajwadi Party on Sunday celebrated the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh as Kisan Diwas. SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and party president Akhilesh Yadav garlanded the portrait of Charan Singh at the party office.
Addressing the meeting Akhilesh Yadav said it was Chaudhary Charan Singh who brought the problems of the farmers to the centre stage of national politics and created political space for the farmers.
The SP chief said Chaudhary Charan Singh made farmers a part of the mainstream political discourse and had the successive governments at the Centre paid heed to the farmers’ issue, the farmers would not have been in distress.
Akhilesh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to confuse and incite people for its own narrow political ends.
The former Chief Minister of UP said the ruling party appeared to believe that it could strengthen its vote bank by exploiting the caste and communal fault lines to inflame the passion.
He, however, maintained that the saffron camp was sadly mistaken as people were now mature and could see through the BJP’s conspiracies.
“Ministers take oath of office and secrecy to discharge their duties conscientiously but the BJP ministers care two hoots about these things,” the SP chief said, while charging the ruling party with giving priority to certain castes in the party structure.
“The Samajwadi Party is committed to social justice and in the present time the fight is between 85 per cent and 15 per cent. Farmers, youths and the minorities are suffering due to BJP’s divisive politics,” the SP chief charged. He added, “This will go against the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.”
