The issue of Brahmins continues to haunt the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh so much that the government has backtracked on its earlier order seeking information about firearms licences issued to the members of this upper caste community.
Responding to a query raised by a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA on the “killing” of Brahmins in UP, the state government sent a letter to the district magistrates, asking them about the number of Brahmins who had applied for and received arms licences. The letter was specific that the district magistrates should furnish the reply by August 21.
But on August 18, the Home Department withdrew the letter, saying the details “are no longer being pursued”.
The controversy started early this month when BJP MLA from Sultanpur, Devmani Dwivedi, asked a question related to the number of Brahmins killed in the past three years.
He also wanted to know how many accused were arrested during this period and in how many cases the police succeeded in getting the accused convicted.
