The bodies of an unidentified girl (8) and a boy (6) with their throats slit were recovered at Gajadharpur village in Fakharpur police station area of Bahraich on Saturday.
The police were yet to ascertain their identities and claimed that a dispute over property could not be ruled out as the motive of their murder.
The Bahraich police formed four teams to ascertain the identity of the victims and track down the assailants.
As per reports, the bodies of the victims were spotted by a local farmer, Shreeram Lodhi, in a sugarcane field and he informed the police about it.
Senior police officials reached the scene of crime and initiated investigations. The throats of both victims were slit using some sharp-edged weapon and both were found clad in lowers only. A team from the forensic department was also pressed into service to collect evidence.
The police later maintained that the children seemed to have been killed somewhere else and their bodies were dumped there to hide the crime.
The locals told police that they had spotted some people holding bags earlier in the day in the fields and suspected that these strangers could have killed the children and dumped their bodies.
All adjoining districts have been informed about the incident and also to check any case of missing children.
