BKU has announced indefinite 'chakka jam' in the state

The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has announced indefinite ‘chakka jam’ in the state from Thursday to press the demand for immediate payment of sugarcane dues to the farmers.

In a letter to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the BKU office-bearer said that they were forced to resort to agitation as the Government had failed to keep its promise to pay the backlog of the cane dues to the farmers by August 20.

“During our dharna at the Cane Commissioner’s office on August 12, the officials had promised to dispose of all cane related issues by August 20. But nothing has happened and the sugar mills still owe around Rs 5,000 crore to the cane farmers,” a letter issued by BKU spokesperson Alok Kumar Singh said here on Wednesday.

The BKU has announced ‘chakka jam’ at all the major sugarcane points of the state along with a massive protest in  lucknow. ‘The ‘chakka jam’ would continue till the entire cane dues were cleared,” Singh said.
