BJP’s national general secretary Varun Gandhi said that law and order situation in the state was bad and situation was reminiscent of emergency days when whosoever raised voice against government was arrested.
He said in a statement issued on Friday after his visit to Moradabad jail where he met BJP activists and workers who were arrested for protesting against administration’s decision to remove loudspeaker from a temple.
“These people were arrested because they raised people’s voice and objected to the partisan policy of the administration. This reminds us of emergency days when innocent people were arrested because they criticized the then Government,” he said and added that he would give his report to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh..
Sixty-two BJP workers were arrested when they fought a pitched battle with the police over removal of loudspeaker from a Shiv temple in a village in Kaanth in Moradabad district. Three BJP MPs Satpal Singh Saini (Sambhal), Naipal Singh (Rampur) and Kanwar Singh Tanwar (Amroha) and Sangeet Som legislator were detained when they were on their way to Kaanth.
“What’s wrong if BJP leaders tried to meet the agitating villagers. They have not gone there of their own. They were invited by the villagers who were holding dharna for last many days demanding installation of loudspeaker. As people’s representative it was their duty to see they support the just demand of the people,” Gandhi said.
Varun Gandhi, who is MP from Sultanpur, said the Samajwadi Party Government was out to placate one section of society. The way SSP, Moradabad gave statement against BJP it shows he is deriving his power from political masters sitting in lucknow, he said.
He was in Moradabad jail for over two hours and held discussions with the arrested party workers.
