To project itself as a protector of triple talaq victims, the Uttar Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to appoint 100 women as ‘teen talaq pramukhs’ across the state to look after the rehabilitation of the victims and their children.
BJP state general secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that the party does not use religion and community for political gains.
“The party had raised the plight of women who were given talaq in one go through SMS and even WhatsApp. For other parties, this might be a political issue but for the BJP it is an issue of gender equality in which we are fighting for the right of the people,” he said.
Pathak said that women who had knowledge about the Islamic law would be appointed as triple talaq pramukhs and in some cases, even the victims were already working with the party to eradicate this social evil.
This was seconded by BJP state minority wing secretary Nazia Alam, who will be the overall in-charge of these pramukhs. She said the triple talaq pramukhs would be appointed in each of the 93 ‘organisational districts’ and six regional units of the BJP in the state.
The BJP state minority wing secretary said the candidates for appointment as ‘teen talaq pramukhs’ would be finalised after Diwali and this would be followed by a survey in December to ascertain the total number of triple talaq victims in the state.
“We will carry out a survey, by the end of December, to know the exact number of victims of triple talaq in every district. Our work is likely to begin after Diwali,” she said.
Nazia Alam further said that the minority wing of the BJP would also launch awareness campaigns to dispel the wrong notions surrounding the holy Quran and Shariat.
