Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of pursuing politics of vendetta against its political rivals.
He said that in the month of Ramzan, SP MP Mohammad Azam Khan and his MLA wife Tazeen Fatma were being harassed in Sitapur jail.
The Khans have been lodged in Sitapur jail since February 26 in connection with the fake birth certificate case of their son and former SP MLA Abdullah Azam.
Akhilesh said that Tazeen Fatma was not getting proper treatment even after she suffered injuries and fractured an arm in jail on May 9.
He said that Azam Khan was also not well but he too was not getting proper treatment.
“This is when Azam Khan is a respected influential leader and his wife Tazeen Fatma is a noted educationist. Both are being persecuted in jail and their image is being maligned just because of their affiliation with the SP,” he said.
On return of migrant workers to UP villages in large numbers, the SP chief said that the BJP regime had promised shelter to every family by 2022, but had failed to provide even two square meals to millions of migrant workers coming back to their villages in the state.
“The poor of the country are facing the brunt of a narcissistic governments at the Centre and in UP. If the government provides food and employment, they will defeat coronavirus without any assistance from the government,”’ said the SP chief.
