Over a dozen persons were injured in a clash between Bharatiya Janata Party and Bahujan Samaj Party supporters over a dilapidated bridge in Sujanpur area of Jaunpur on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, BSP MLA Sushma Patel and BJP's former legislator Seema Dwivedi had gone to Sujanpur in Jaunpur to pacify the villagers protesting against the closure of a local bridge on Wednesday morning.

The villagers were demanding that the bridge be reopened for two-wheelers so that children going to schools were not affected. Later, the authorities said that they would allow two-wheelers on the bridge.

However, after the announcement, the supporters of BSP and BJP leaders started shouting slogans in the support of their leader, claiming credit for the reopening of the bridge for two-wheelers and this led to the clash, sources said, and added, that later, the BSP MLA lodged a complaint against Seema Dwivedi.

The injured were shifted to hospital and a heavy police force was deployed in the area to avert any further clash.

Meanwhile, five people were injured in a stone-pelting incident when two groups clashed over uploading of objectionable photo of a 17-year-old girl on social media in Shamli district. The police later arrested 12 people.

According to reports, a man uploaded an objectionable photo of the girl on social media. The girl's family objected to it on Tuesday evening and took up the issue with the man, who is from the same village. This led to a clash between the families of the accused and the girl.

In the violent clash, both sides pelted each other with stones, the police said. Five people were injured in the clash, according to the police.

As many as twelve people from both the sides were arrested in connection with the clash. The police are investigating the matter.
