The state government has imposed a ban on use of polythene and plastic in the temple towns of Mathura and Vrindavan with immediate effect and the same would be extended to more religious places.

Government spokesman said district administration of this twin city has been asked to impose ban. “Anyone found flouting this order will well be severely dealt with,” the spokesman said.

The plastic and polythene is already banned in the religious cities of Uttarkahand including Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarenath and Badrinath. “The government proposes to extend similar ban on other religious places in Uttar Pradesh,” the spokesman said.

Following an Allahabad High Court order in 2012 and a notification issued by Ministry of Environment and Forest in 2011, the district authorities were asked to ban carry bags made of polythene, plastic glasses, bowls, pouches and plates. “The district magistrate has been asked to carry out a drive to ban polythene and plastics,” he said.
