CM orders stern action against accused

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered stern action against those involved in the gruesome rape and murder of a woman in Badaun. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the CM directed the ADG, Bareilly Zone, to report to the government on the incident and action taken against the accused.  The CM also said that the STF would be assisting the district police in the investigation. Besides Badaun, Yogi also ordered a SIT probe into the Muradnagar roof collapse in Ghaziabad where 27 people have been killed so far.

A 50-year-old Anganwadi worker was gang-raped and brutally murdered allegedly by a priest and his two aides in Badaun. The incident revived memories of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case of 2012 in Delhi. Two of the accused were arrested on Tuesday while the priest is on the run, police said, adding that woman fractured her leg and there were injuries in her private parts.

“The report of the autopsy, conducted by a panel consisting of three doctors, confirms rape. There were injuries in her private parts and fracture in the leg,” SSP Sankalp Sharma said. He added that the station house officer of Ughaiti has been suspended for laxity.

“On Sunday, the 50-year-old woman, who had gone to a temple, was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Family members of the woman have accused the temple mahant (priest) and his aides of rape and murder. Based on this, a case was registered against the accused. Two of the accused were arrested on Tuesday night while the mahant is still absconding,” he said. Four teams have been formed to nab the priest, the SSP said.

The victim’s son said his mother had gone to the temple pay obeisance to the deity on Sunday but did not return. Around 11 pm, the temple priest and two of his aides reached his house and handed over his mother’s body, he said. Before the family members could ask how she died, the accused left saying that she had fallen into a dry well, and the body was pulled out.
