AMUTA and University Administration have again locked horns

The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) and University Administration have again locked horns, this time over suspension of two professors.

AMUTA in an unanimous resolution passed in its emergent meeting of the General Body expressed serious concern over the suspensions of Associate Professor, Department of History, Dr Ali Nadeem Rezavi, and Professor Department of Statistics, Dr Hasan Mateenul Islam. The association had even opposed the act of sealing their chambers.

“The General Body demanded that their suspensions be revoked immediately and the entire matter must be enquired by a high power committee involving all aspects of their suspensions and the seals placed on their chambers should be removed without any delay,” said Honorary Secretary AMUTA, Dr Aftab Alam.

He stated that the suspension of two teachers in a quick succession is unprecedented in the history of AMU and bring the morale of teachers down which will adversely affect the teaching learning process in the university. The sealing of the room of suspended faculties is not only a direct affront on their dignity but will also deprive the students to benefit from their long experience of teaching and research.

AMUTA reiterated its earlier stand that a teacher who does not hold any significant administrative position to influence any inquiry against him should not be suspended unless and until he is proved guilty by a duly constituted Enquiry Committee.

The association complained that this year lesser number of children of university employees has been able to secure admission under Nomination category as compared to previous years. It has also been discovered that Candidates have been offered admission without securing requisite 5 percent marks in the Admission Test and in some cases even candidates have been offered admission without even applying for the same and appearing in the Admission Test.

“A high power Enquiry Committee should be constituted to find out the details of all violations of rules in University admissions including admissions in schools against casual vacancies and responsibility should be fixed on persons who did these violations since this has led to colossal damage to the reputation of the University,” he demanded.  It also authorised the office bearers to decide the further course of action if these demands are not met within the reasonable period of time and also bring out a White Paper on all violations of University rules.
