Samajwadi Party president and Leader of Opposition in UP Assembly Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday asked the party cadre to hoist the national flag at their homes on the occasion of Independence Day.
He said due care should be taken to ensure that the sanctity and dignity of the national flag remained intact. He said every citizen should voluntarily hoist the national flag made of khadi. “Mahatma Gandhi had on August 9, 1942 given the ‘do or die’ call. As soon as the Quit India resolution was adopted by the Congress on August 8, 1942, the British colonial government had unleashed repression and all top leaders of the freedom movement were arrested by the early hours of August 9,” Akhilesh said.
The SP chief said the movement was led by Jai Prakash Naryan, Dr Lohia, Usha Mehta and Aruna Asif Ali. Despite tight security arrangements, Aruna Asif Ali had hoisted the Tricolour at the Gwalior tank in Mumbai,” he recalled. The SP chief said India attained freedom due to the people's movement spearheaded by socialist leaders.
