Prior to the arrival of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav arrived in the city around 11 am and met the family members of property dealer Manish Gupta who allegedly died after a police assault in a hotel room in Gorakhpur.
On reaching the house of the deceased property dealer in Barra, the SP chief met the bereaved family members and held the police responsible of the “murder” of Manish Gupta and said recurrence of such incidents would continue in the state till the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government was in Uttar Pradesh.
He said the government was inclined to bury the issue under the carpet and demanded immediate suspension of the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police of Gorakhpur.
He also announced to extend financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
During his visit, a large number of Samajwadi Party workers were present in front of the house of Manish Gupta in Barra.
In a bid to avert any untoward incident, a heavy police force was deployed there.
During the meeting with the family members of the deceased property dealer, Yadav demanded Rs.2 crore as compensation for the bereaved family and a government job to the wife of the deceased as per her educational qualification. He also sought a CBI probe into the incident as demanded by the victim's kin.
Akhilesh Yadav said after the death of Manish Gupta, the police had quickly removed evidence, including blood-stains and CCTV footage etc. from the Gorakhpur hotel.
Yadav said such officers should have been suspended forthwith but so far mere formalities were being done on pretext of a probe.
Manish's wife Meenakshi and family member Komal confirmed that former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had assured to extend financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh and all possible help to them.
Earlier, anticipating the arrival of the Samajwadi Party president in Barra, the police performed the cremation of Manish Gupta early Thursday morning itself.
SP MLAs Irfan Solanki, Amitabh Bajpai, former secretary Surendra Mohan Agarwal, city unit president Dr Imran and other party leaders were also present.
