Akhilesh condemns murder of UP Bar Council president

Condemning the murder of Uttar Pradesh Bar Council president Darvesh Singh Yadav, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said that law and order had gone from bad to worse in Uttar Pradesh and now people should think about their own security themselves.

He also demanded a probe by a High Court judge into the murder of Darvesh Singh Yadav.

Akhilesh gave this statement after attending the last rites of the first woman president of UP Bar Council, in Etah on Thursday.

“The murder of a senior lawyer inside a lawyer’s chamber on the Agra civil court premises is a shocking incident that cannot even be imagined by someone. This speaks volumes about the law and order situation in the state. What is more shocking is that criminals were calling the shots when the Chief Minister was holding a meeting on law and order situation,” the SP chief told reporters in Etah.

The government should provide assistance of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the deceased lawyer, he said.

The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said that there was no point in hoping for justice from this government, adding that the probe of such a serious crime should be conducted by a judge of the High Court.

Akhilesh Yadav said, “After the (Lok Sabha) elections, SP workers are being targeted and killed. We will give a list to the Governor of the people who have been murdered (after polls). The role of the police should also be probed in these murder cases. People cannot hope for justice from this government.”

Raising a question on the role of the Governor, the SP president expressed his suspicion on the government in these killings and wondered if the police were involved in the murders of SP workers.

“There seems to be a deep rooted controversy. There is an attempt to end the Samajwadi Party. This government should realise that samajwad is a philosophy which cannot be killed by bullets,” Yadav said.

He, however, refused to take questions on his party’s relationship with Bahujan Samaj Party or the reported efforts for rapprochement in the Yadav family.
