All-India Personal Law Board will oppose the Triple Talaq Bill to be introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Narendra Modi government shortly.
The AIMPLB is likely to convene a meeting of its executive to discuss the issue and submit a fresh representation to the Union government, reiterating its opposition to the bill.
Earlier this week, taking a fresh call to ban the practice of instant triple talaq, the Union cabinet approved the bill to be introduced in the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha commencing from June 16.
With the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha last month, the contentious bill against triple talaq had lapsed as it could not be passed by Parliament as it was pending in the Rajya Sabha.
Once passed by Parliament, the bill will replace an ordinance issued earlier this year.
The AIMPLB has already termed the Triple Talaq Bill as a political agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government and plans to convince opposition parties and seek their support for opposing the bill in Rajya Sabha.
Sources said in Lucknow on Friday that a meeting to discuss the issue would be convened soon as the Modi government has announced to table the fresh Triple Talaq Bill in Lok Sabha.
The AIMPLB office-bearers maintained that the present form of the bill was violation of the rights of married women and also violated earlier rulings of the Supreme Court.
“When the Supreme Court has already pronounced that triple talaq is illegal, then how can an accused be sent to jail,” they questioned.
Another important issue on the agenda of the AIMPLB is the Muslim outreach programme announced by the Modi government for addressing social, educational and economic backwardness of the community.
Indicative of a strong desire of the government to reach out, Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s recent announcement about a few new schemes for educational empowerment of minorities, especially for Muslims, is seen as a positive move by a large number of Muslim clerics — both Shia and Sunni.
