The Faizabad police arrested 47 VHP activists who tried to take out the banned 84-kosi yatra on Tuesday evening.
The arrested persons were sent to jail. Faizabad district police chief KB Singh said the arrests were made in Khandasa area on Tuesday evening when some persons claiming to be activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) tried to perform the banned ‘parikrama’ as it could disturb peace. The VHP, however, claimed that the police arrested 150 persons.
On August 25, the police had detained several leaders of VHP, including Ashok Singhal, Praveen Togadia, when they were going to Faizabad to start the 84-kosi yatra which was banned by the state Government. So far over 7,000 activists of VHP and other Hindu organisations have been held across the state for violating the prohibitory orders and trying to take out the banned yatra. However, majority of the arrested persons have been released on the condition that they will not make any attempt to disturb peace in the state.
