In the current cane season 2017-18, 43 sugar mills have commenced the cane crushing. The sugar mills have so far purchased 1.2 crore quintals of sugarcane from the Farmers and have produced 10 lakh quintals of sugar so far. During the same period in last cane season only three sugar mills had commenced operation by November 3.
The Cane Commissioner Sanjay Bhoosraddy said here on Friday that it’s the results of the efforts of the state government that 43 sugar mills out of total 119 have commenced their operations in the first week of November. He said out of total 43 sugar mills commencing the operations 2 are of cooperative sector and rest are of private sector. He said this season sugar mills have started cane crushing 15 days before as compared to last crushing season 2016-17. He said the early cane crushing by the sugar mills would help the farmers to sow the wheat crop in their fields for the Rabi season.
He said for effectively eliminating the problem of delay in payment by the sugar mills to the sugarcane growers, all the mills are re4quired to deposit the proceeds from the sale of sugar in escrow accounts. The collections in the account would be utilized only for the purpose of making payment to the farmers against the sugarcane purchased by the mills from the farmers.
