The second strain of coronavirus continued to play havoc with 195 people dying in the last 24 hours and 34,379 fresh cases were reported from across the state. It was another highest single-day spike in Covid cases.
The large-scale infections have led to paucity of beds, oxygen and life-saving drugs in hospitals, triggering panic among people. The situation accentuated with relatives being asked to take their patients from private hospitals due to shortage of oxygen. The administration of many hospital administrations wrote to CMOs of respective districts that they were running out of oxygen and expressed helplessness in being forced to shift patients to other hospitals due to this reason.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, however, appointed nodal officers in each hospital to monitor the availability of oxygen. A government spokesman said that against 34,379 fresh cases, 16,514 people were discharged from various hospitals and there are 2.59 lakh active cases.
Lucknow recorded 5,239 fresh cases and 19 deaths, but 6,207 patients were discharged. Varanasi recorded 1813 fresh cases and 10 deaths while Prayagraj recorded 2,013 cases and 18 deaths, followed by Kanpur where 1,516 new cases were detected along with 18 deaths.
An official claimed that vaccination had gained momentum and so far, 94.70 lakh people being administered the first dose of vaccine across the state while 18.14 lakh were given the second dose of vaccine.
