A 19-year-old girl was shot dead by her former boyfriend while she was on her way home with her elder brother on a bike in Bareilly on Tuesday. The accused, identified as Rajneesh, attended the same school as the victim.
The victim's brother told the police that they were returning home after shopping in Fatehganj East area on Tuesday, when Rajneesh approached them on a bike and knocked them down on the road. Later, the assailant dragged the girl by the hair, tore her clothes and shot her five times from a point-blank range. The injured brother further said the attack was over even before he could pick himself up and save his sister.
SSP, Bareilly, Rohit Singh Sajwan said that while several police teams were searching for Rajneesh, the accused walked into his office later on Tuesday evening, and surrendered along with the murder weapon. “Rajneesh confessed that he killed the girl because she did not keep her promise of marrying him. Locals claimed the girl broke off ties with Rajneesh after her parents came to know about their relationship and did not approve of it. They later fixed her marriage elsewhere and she was ready to follow her parents' wishes.”
The SSP further said, "The girl was shot in the neck and abdomen and she died on the spot. Her body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Tuesday evening. An FIR was registered against Rajneesh under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 504 (intentional insult) and the accused was sent to jail. Also a police team has been deployed at the village to maintain law and order till the matter settles down.”.
Meanwhile in Meerut, A 19-year-old woman was found dead inside a bathroom of a banquet hall during a wedding in Meerut late on Monday night. While the police registered a case of murder, the woman’s family alleged that she was raped and strangulated. The woman's family also accused the police of shielding a constable who was found in an inebriated state in a room attached to the bathroom. No one has been arrested so far.
SSP (Meerut) Prabhakar Chaudhary told media persons, “We recovered the woman victim’s body from a washroom attached to a room where a drunk police constable was found sleeping. A case of murder has been lodged in this connection. Forensic experts have also been pressed into service. We are investigating further.”
Sources confirmed that the constable was among the guests and the police were informed about the woman going missing from the wedding venue on Monday night. “When a police team reached there, the girl's kin had found her body in a bathroom. They also beat up the constable alleging that he was responsible for the murder and possible rape. We cannot confirm the rape charge as the postmortem report is still awaited,” said Deputy SP, Poonam Sirohi.
“The woman's family said those attending the wedding had a scuffle with the bouncers after the manager of the banquet hall refused to share the CCTV video footage of the night. 'We have sealed the marriage hall and a case will be registered against the manager and the bouncers who misbehaved with the girl's kin. The role of the police constable is also being investigated and action will be taken if he is found guilty,” said Sirohi.
