Yakub Memon's hanging brings just some comfort

Published on:
This refers to the editorial, “No mercy for a terrorist” (July 30). Finally, Yakub Memon has been executed. He had exhausted all his legal options after his mercy plea was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee. There were desperate attempts made by his lawyers and supporters which forced the Supreme Court to open at 3AM for the judges to hear a final plea. This was a first in the history of India. But at the end of the day, justice has been done to the 257 innocent lives who were killed on that fateful black Friday in Mumbai, 22 years back.
On humanitarian grounds, one has the right to file a plea, but where were all these armchair critics — who did a candlelight march for Yakub Memom — when and innocent people were killed during the 1993 Mumbai blastsIJ Why don't they value these lives equallyIJ It took 22 years for justice to be delivered, and even then but Yakub Memon’s execution will only give some comfort to the family members of those who were killed.
