Sir — Union Minister for Home Affairs Sushil Kumar Shinde’s letter to Chief Ministers that no innocent Muslim should be detained, has caused a flutter. The instruction should be applicable to everyone, not just the Muslims.
Delayed delivery of justice has contributed to the prolonged detention of innocent persons. There are instances where innocent persons are imprisoned for more years than they would have to be in jail had they been convicted. A lot has been said about problems in the criminal justice system, but little has been done to remedy the situation. Mr Shinde must remember that he is not a Minister for one particular religious community.
