Sir — It was really embarrassing for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discover that Anna Hazare failed to turn up at a rally recently in Delhi, where the two were to share the dais.
Although he initially cited health reasons for his absence, he later acknowledged what was well known: He did not come because of the poor public attendance at the venue. Ms Banerjee’s recently-established equation with Anna Hazare was destined to receive a setback since the BJP has become the cynosure of all eyes in the country before the lok Sabha election, and the people of Delhi are still supporting the AAP led by Mr Arvind Kejriwal.
The West Bengal Chief Minister tries to paint BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi with the same old brush which the Congress and other so-called secular parties use. She has failed understand that there are many political leaders of various outfits joining the BJP and leaving the Congress in the lurch because they think that it will help them be part of the winning team in the lok Sabha election and allow them entry into governance.
In this situation, Ms Banerjee is doing the exact opposite. It is good that she has made attempts to enter the mainstream of national politics like her predecessors of the left Front from the State did, but she is pushing the wrong agenda and following a worn-out political policy. She should have aligned with either the BJP or the AAP to draw crowds in Delhi.
