This refers to the article, “Plugging loopholes in the surrogacy laws” (October 30) by Shobori Ganguli. As a first step towards women’s liberation, women should be allowed to make their own choice. Passing laws on what a woman can/cannot do is a symbol of patriarchy. Even if surrogacy is banned in India, it will merely paint a media picture that it does not respect women. Surrogacy, in fact, gives women in the rural areas, an opportunity to earn money. By putting a ban on surrogacy, the Government will only put such women in danger.
