Winning hearts

With his historic visit to Hiroshima and the compassion with which he embraced Shigeaki Mori, one of the survivors of the 1945 atomic bombing, US President Barack Obama proved to the world that he is a fit recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, which had been awarded to him.

His summing up of the visit with a clarion call to end the nuclear arms race, with an assurance to lead a moral revolution for the purpose, made a difference. No doubt, Obama assuaged the hurt feelings of the Japanese more by expressions that came from his heart than with a standard apology that would have appeared to be  formal or even hypocritical.
