Sir — This refers to the article, “Indian liberalisation 2.0” (June 22). Prices of products manufactured by foreign firms, utilisation of India’s manpower in the production process, rights and welfare of workers and national security are concerns thrown up after the Modi Government announcing sweeping changes in India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) policy.
Moreover, there is no guarantee that foreign companies will not tag high prices on essential services and goods. This will pinch the hardest when there is no increase in the purchasing power of the people.
Rapacious giant companies will invest to make profits with scant regard for the rights and dignity of the workers. Indian businessmen may wilt and wither in the face of competition from global giants. Attracting investment and job creation are worth pursuing; but they need be pursued commensurate with the Indian context. It is mere delusion to think that FDI alone will usher in economic prosperity and achche din.
