This refers to the report, “The darkest day” (February 13). Happenings in the lok Sabha on Thursday reflect the Congress's catastrophic failure to protect the dignity, tradition and values of Parliament and democracy. The party’s top leadership has lost control over its MPs. If MPs behaves like criminals, then people are ruled by laws criminals make. We felt proud as citizens of the world's largest democracy, but today we feel ashamed.
Parliament is becoming a battlefield where MPs are adorned with weapons not of logical debate but those like pepper sprays. If our democratic destiny is to be controlled by uncivilised representatives who cannot be punished, then it's best not to have such a system of democracy. The Congress must learn lessons from Ms Mamata Banerjee who has handled the Gorkhaland issue adroitly. It cannot bulldoze its will over a large majority of the people of a State. It must first win them over.
